Office Chairs — Expert Answer

Can I use an office chair on a thick area rug without a chair mat?

Standard office chair casters can roll on low-pile area rugs without a mat, but on thick pile (3/4"+ pile height) they sink in and become difficult to roll. For thick rugs, either use a chair mat with carpet grippers on the underside, or upgrade to larger-diameter rollerblade casters (60mm) which roll more freely on soft surfaces. Avoid chair mats with the spike underside (intended for carpet) on decorative area rugs — the spikes will damage the rug backing. FindOfficeFurniture.com has office chairs with caster options for different floor types — call 888-719-4960.
