What type of casters do I need for carpet vs. hard floors?

Hard nylon casters are designed for carpet — they roll well but will scratch hardwood and tile. Soft polyurethane casters are designed for hard floors — smooth rolling without floor damage. Most office chairs ship with hard casters as default. If you have hard floors, request soft casters when ordering or purchase them separately — most use a standard 7/16" stem and are easily swapped.
