Benching > Depth - 30 in

Benching is a long, shared-surface desk setup where multiple people sit along both sides of a continuous run — think of a big communal worktable with structure and cable management built right in. It is the go-to setup for tech companies, agencies, call centers, and coworking spaces that want to pack in seats without building out rows of cubicles. Each seat typically gets 48 to 66 inches of width and 24 to 30 inches of depth — enough room for a monitor, keyboard, and a notebook. Most runs are set up for 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 paired users per spine. If you are buying for a big floor plan, plan around 48 to 54 inches per person as a solid starting point and go wider if the space allows it.

Yes — the spine running down the center of the bench carries an integrated power raceway with outlets and USB charging ports distributed at each seat position. The modesty panel often houses the outlets so they are easy to reach without bending under the surface. Check the product page for the specific outlet count and USB charging wattage per seat before you order — power density varies by series.

Absolutely. Most benching systems let you snap on low fabric or acrylic screens — typically 12 to 24 inches tall above the worksurface — to create a visual break between seats without building tall walls. Some configs add side returns for lateral privacy too. If noise is the bigger concern in your space, look for fabric screens over acrylic since fabric absorbs more sound.

Benching runs lower cost per seat than traditional cubicle systems because there is less panel material, less hardware, and faster installation. You also get a more open look that feels current. The trade-off is less acoustic separation and less personal space per seat. For collaborative, heads-up work environments, benching is a smart way to land more seats per square foot without the cubicle price tag.

Any standard task chair pairs with benching — match the seat height to the bench height, which is typically 29 to 30 inches. Hard-floor casters (urethane) are worth the upgrade if your space has hardwood, tile, or polished concrete floors. Carpet casters are fine on standard commercial carpet. If ergonomics matter for long-day users, grab a chair with lumbar and arm adjustments rather than a basic stacking chair.

Benching is built for change — that is one of its biggest selling points. Adding seats usually means extending the spine and adding worksurface tiles, screen panels, and power channel covers. Most commercial benching systems are designed so you do not need to tear down what you have built. Check the product page for the specific add-on components available for the series you are considering.

Benching ships in multiple cartons — the spine, worksurface tiles, screen panels, and power components pack separately. Setup typically requires two people for panel alignment and surface placement. Plan a half-day or more for a full 8 to 12-person run. All hardware is included; you will need a Phillips driver and a rubber mallet to seat panel connectors on most commercial series.

Commercial benching systems are built for years of daily multi-user abuse, and the warranty reflects that. We back every purchase with a Free Lifetime Warranty unless specifically noted — the frame welds, spine channels, worksurface substrate, and screen hardware are all covered. That is a much longer coverage window than anything in the flat-pack consumer market.

Most commercial benching surfaces land at 29 to 30 inches high, which clears the 27-inch minimum knee space required for ADA accessible seated positions. Leave 30 by 48 inches of clear floor space at each accessible seat position for a wheelchair user to pull up. If you need a height-adjustable surface at one seat in the run, look for benching series that offer a powered or manual adjustable segment at the accessible position.
