Bookcases > # of Shelves - 5

This is a catch-all parent category — most models run from low units at 30 to 42 inches tall up to tall standard units at 72 to 84 inches. Open shelving for books, binders, and display sits alongside door-fronted versions for hiding clutter. Since heights vary widely by model here, you may want to drill into the [low bookcases](https://www.findofficefurniture.com/low-bookcases) or [standard bookcases](https://www.findofficefurniture.com/bookcases) sub-pages for more specific options once you know your height target.

Heights vary by model across this category — low units run 30 to 42 inches, mid units hit 48 to 60 inches, and tall units run 72 to 84 inches. Widths most commonly land at 30 to 36 inches; narrow 24-inch models squeeze into tight spots. Measure your wall space and ceiling height before you order, especially for tall units — a 84-inch bookcase in a room with 8-foot ceilings leaves almost no clearance and can look awkward.

Most models come with adjustable shelves on a 1.25 to 2-inch pin-hole grid — you can shift shelf positions to fit different binder heights, oversized reference books, or display items. Most models include one fixed bottom shelf for structural rigidity. If you are storing a mix of standard binders and tall art books, the adjustable grid gives you the flexibility to dial it in without buying a custom unit.

Materials vary by model — wood veneer over engineered core for executive and director offices, laminate over engineered core for standard office programs, painted steel for industrial and open-plan environments, and glass-door models for reception display. Finish options across this parent category are broad, so use the filters on the sub-category pages to narrow down to the finish family that matches your existing furniture.

Yes — standard safety guidance calls for wall-anchoring any bookcase at 60 inches or taller. Most commercial tall units include an anti-tip kit in the box that anchors to a wall stud or masonry anchor. Do not skip this step, especially in offices where kids visit, in earthquake-prone areas, or anywhere a heavy loaded bookcase tipping is a real risk. The hardware is included — use it.

Open-shelf units are great for display, easy access, and keeping reference materials visible. Door-fronted units hide clutter behind closed doors — very useful in client-facing offices where you want a clean look. Many door-fronted models include a lock on the doors for light-security storage of HR files or personal items. Some models combine both — open shelves on top, closed doors on the bottom — which covers multiple needs in one piece.

Shelf load ratings vary by model, but most commercial bookcases handle 50 to 75 pounds per shelf of evenly spread load — that covers a full row of binders or reference books without issue. Dense legal or financial record binders run heavier, so if you are loading shelves with archival records, check the per-shelf rating on the product page before you order. Evenly spread the load across multiple shelves rather than packing one shelf to max capacity.

Most bookcases require attaching the side panels to the top and bottom, inserting the back panel, setting the shelf pins, and dropping in the shelves. Door-fronted models add hinge attachment and door alignment. Plan 30 to 60 minutes for a standard open bookcase; 60 to 90 minutes for a taller door-fronted unit. A second person makes the panel alignment much easier on anything over 60 inches tall.

We back every bookcase with our Free Lifetime Warranty unless specifically noted — the case, shelf hardware, and door hardware are all covered. That warranty applies across the parent category whether you land on a low unit or a tall executive veneer model. Consumer-grade bookcases from big-box retailers typically carry 1 year or less; commercial units are a different story.

Yes — keep your most-accessed materials on shelves between 15 and 48 inches off the floor, which is the ADA forward-reach range for wheelchair users. Shelves above 48 inches on a tall bookcase are out of reach for most wheelchair users, so plan storage accordingly if accessibility matters for your space. Leave 36 inches of clear aisle in front of any bookcase position for wheelchair approach and retrieval.
