A desk hutch gives you overhead storage that lands right on the back edge of your desk or credenza return. You get eye-level shelves and door storage for binders, books, and reference materials — a great way to pull stuff off the desk top and keep your work zone clear. Pull out a tape measure on your ceiling first, since the stack runs tall.

Most desk hutches run 60 to 72 inches wide, 12 to 14 inches deep, and 36 to 42 inches tall. Combined with your desk underneath, the stack lands at 65 to 72 inches off the floor. Have a buddy ready with a measuring tape — your ceiling needs to clear the stack plus 18 inches of sprinkler clearance.

You can grab open shelves (active reference at arm's reach), panel doors (hides binders and supplies), glass doors (displays awards and credentials), tackboard inserts (pinned notes and reminders), or task-light shelves (lights up the desk below). Mix and match against what you're storing.

The hutch attaches with a cleat-and-bracket mount to the back of the desk worksurface or to a wall stud behind it. Have a buddy ready when you lift the hutch into position — even an empty hutch weighs 60 to 100 pounds. The bracket hardware comes with the hutch.

You need a minimum 18-inch clearance from the top of the hutch to the room sprinkler heads, per the NFPA 13 sprinkler spec. A 65 to 72 inch stack clears a 9-foot ceiling comfortably. Pull out a tape measure on your ceiling height before you order.

You can grab thermally fused laminate (TFL) for the wallet-friendly pick, high-pressure laminate (HPL) for harder-use rooms, or wood veneer over engineered core for the executive coordinated look. Match the hutch finish to your desk for a clean stack.

Put your most-used contents on the lower shelves for accessible programs. The hutch above the desk doesn't change the ADA clearance underneath.
