Practical tips from our furniture specialists — the specs that matter, common buying mistakes, and what to look for before you order.
The correct position is with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, at arm's length (roughly 20" to 28" from your eyes). This reduces neck flexion and eye strain during extended screen use. Most monitor arms allow precise tuning of both height and distance.
Remove the factory stand, look up your monitor's weight in its spec sheet, and confirm the arm's capacity exceeds that weight. Arms listed as supporting 'up to 17 lbs' will hold most monitors, but 32"+ displays often weigh 15 to 20 lbs without a stand.
The writing surface should start at 36" for standing use. In rooms with both standing and seated users, 32" allows more seated visibility. Mount into wall studs or use rated wall anchors — large whiteboards can weigh 40+ lbs.
Low-quality markers ghost even on premium boards. Use name-brand dry-erase markers and erase within 48 to 72 hours — markers left for days are harder to remove cleanly. Use a felt eraser, not paper towels, which can scratch melamine surfaces.
Standard bookcases are 12" deep — adequate for paperback books and binders. Larger binders (3"+), oversized books, or equipment require 15" to 16" depth. Measure your largest items before specifying shelf depth.
Monitor arm clamps grip the desk edge and typically accommodate 1" to 3" of edge thickness. Measure your desk edge before ordering. If the edge is thicker or beveled at an angle, a through-desk grommet mount may be the better option.
Multiple whiteboards can be mounted side-by-side using alignment hardware to create a continuous writing surface. This is more cost-effective than ordering a custom large-format board, and individual panels can be replaced if damaged.
The few dollars saved on fixed-shelf bookcases aren't worth the long-term limitation. Adjustable pin shelves can be repositioned in minutes as your storage needs change. Always verify the pin spacing and whether replacement shelves are available.
An under-desk cable tray (J-channel, basket, or wire mesh) clamps or screws to the underside of the desk surface and collects cables running to a power strip. The installation takes 10 minutes and eliminates most cable chaos.
Regular erasable boards should be cleaned weekly with a whiteboard spray cleaner to prevent ink buildup in the surface texture. For porcelain boards, monthly deep cleans are usually sufficient. Neglecting cleaning permanently dulls even premium board surfaces.
